DANCE FOR PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON’S AND THEIR CARERS

13 Jan 2016

DANCE FOR PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON’S AND THEIR CARERS.
Following a successful term offering taster movement and dance sessions to members of Parkinson’s UK in Torrington under Dance in Devon’s project, ‘Fire and Water’ these movement and dance sessions for people with Parkinson's will continue at St Peter’s Church Hall, Fremington, near Barnstaple. I will use the techniques imparted by The English National Ballet, through the National Dance Company Wales whose training course I attended at the Millenium Centre, Cardiff, Wales last year. The National Ballet of England has been very successfully delivering the dance for Parkinson’s programme since 2010. Their ground breaking research demonstrated how dance can positively affect well-being, physical movement, and social integration for those living with this debilitating condition.
I will use cross my experience of cultural movement and dance to create an atmosphere where everyone can have lots of fun exploring movement from different cultures and themes.
In the evaluation, The secretary of Parkinson’s UK, Torridge said “It was a new experience for all participants. People have returned to each session who would normally be reserved, and participated in everything Rebecca suggested. Rebecca also gave us the opportunity to come up with our ideas and themes. We have all learnt to let go!”
The classes began on Monday 15th January at St Peter’s Church Hall, Hill Top, Fremington EX31 3BL, and continue until the end of June 2016. All people with Parkinson's and their carers are welcome.
